Opening Doors to Hidden Heritage
Opening Doors to Hidden Heritage is an exciting new project funded through
the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and managed by The Space4.
The grant from HLF for the project opens the doors to historic buildings,
structures and monuments in Peterborough and the surrounding area that
are currently difficult to access and appreciate.
Opening doors to Hidden Heritage is a ten month project which will
give virtual access to fifty of Peterborough’s most interesting
and different historic sites. The project team will use photography,
video and archive material to create a record of buildings and monuments
including a civil war fort and a 17th Century Guild Hall, showing how
they have changed over the years.
This archive work will be combined with recorded interviews of local
people talking about their experiences, thoughts and memories of the
sites, and a major exhibition subsequently held at the Space4 gallery
to showcase the findings.
Many of the proposed sites are inaccessible to the public, so this
scheme will open up Peterborough’s hidden heritage to many more
people. It will enable everyone involved to learn about the history
of buildings they may walk past every day but know nothing about, and
how they were created and transformed to their current condition. Workshops
will be held during the exhibition, encouraging schools and other visitors
to explore how structures are built and best used.
